Still swimming like a fish!
I'm just so proud of James! He loves his swim lessons and goshdarnit, he's good at it!
The last of his swimming lessons were in early June. I was happy to see his fast swim!
Jim usually takes James to swimming lessons but on this fine evening I took James. It is tradition to eat at DQ and get a small chocolate cone "for strength".
He really needed it for this workout! Lots of back and forth swimming, plus some safety lessons.
Lots of breathing tips, some "what if" scenarios, and then swimming with bulky clothing. Not easy they found out!
I took James to his swim class in late April was fortunate enough to see his new skill- side breath!
He really just dives in and tries his best!
Here's the side breath.
Side breath.
A race to finish!
And there was a dentist appointment. No cavities! But silent tears. He really doesn't like fingers and instruments in his mouth. Oh, and they are referring us to the orthodontist...!
And work related for me- I went on a behind the scenes tour of the Target Stadium! I was supposed to help chaperone this fieldtrip but I had so much fun with my friend Jessica (a HUGE Twins fan) that it didn't seem like work (: Too bad it was rainy and we couldn't get on the field.
On to May 2014...!
Jim usually takes James to swim lessons. They have a Saturday tradition, which usually involves a bagel run.
Jim was out of town so I was trusted with this honor. (Jimmy actually sent me a reminder, like I'd oversleep and miss it. Likely :)
When I don't see the swimming for a while it is shocking to his progress. He's not really needing the flotation thingies, but he doesn't quite have the stamina to swim entirely on his own for long lengths. That will come!
And two vidos.
Backstroke..
Diving...
One of the ideas we've always tossed around is taking a spin in a paddle boat on our very local man-made lake. We aren't frequent visitors of the lake. We're close enough to walk, but it's a haul if you're carrying beach supplies. James isn't confident enough on his bike yet to make the journey, so we usually drive to the beach.
So we rented our paddleboat for the hour. I very quickly realized I'd be doing all the work on this venture. James could reach the pedals, but not easily. He also tires pretty quickly.
Jim was at home, working. But he decided to take a walk around the lake and captured the picture below from a bridge. Hi Dad!
We probably only paddled around for about half the hour. It was a lot of work!
We spent some time at the playground. It was a perfect weather day.
I was sitting on the ground and taking these pictures of James. It was pretty fun.
Different color effects.
Pretty cool picture for a cool kid!
Swim lessons continue!
A new skill though! Diving! He loves it! He wants to save up his money to buy diving rings.
Please note: he wants to buy EVERYTHING. He is terrible at saving money so far. He spends it as fast as he gets it! And he doesn't NEED diving rings, so NO.
We didn't go heavy on the lessons and things for the summer. James has a weekly swim lesson and then weekly golf lessons (but only for 5 weeks). He has been enjoying both of them!
He's getting quite accomplished at swimming. I think he's also gaining a lot of strength.
I didn't know what to expect for his first golf lesson. The lessons are at the Bunker golf course. He is one of the youngest in the class. They immediately split up into two age groups, 5-8, and then 9-12.
Here is James practicing his putting before the class began.
The instructors group the kids together and explain what's going down that day.
The lesson is 90 minutes long. Most of the parents dropped off their children quickly and took off. SEEYA. I have never done that before so the first day I did stick around. I pulled out a folding chair from the trunk and settled down with some reading. It was pretty hot!
He's had a few lessons since then and has been doing well! He really does love individual sports. I love that he's not getting tackled :)
Right before the big graduation week, Westwood school had its School Carnival. We received the flyer so we knew it was going to be BIG but we had no idea.
Tons of inflatables and contraptions.
James was quick to run inside an inflatable to bounce and explore. It was hard to keep track of your child, unless you kept an eye on the exit.
Sometimes I spied him through the peep holes..
And then he saw this HUGE slide. I didn't think he'd actually go down it, but I'm not one to discourage or project MY fears on to my child.
So I waited at the bottom to snap some pictures. Three right in a row.
He came down feet first, SUPER fast, feet flying at my camera. I was quick to catch him and then he insisted AGAIN AGAIN! So a few more times and then on to the next inflatable thingie.
It was a sorta chilly day but that didn't stop James from wanting to go down this HUGE water slide. Again, I really doubted he'd go down it but I was pleasantly suprised to watch James wait patiently in the line, climb up the rope ladder, and then FLY down this water slide.
NO FEAR! So awesome!
His second time down...
And then his final third time...
I was super proud of him! And what a fun carnival!
